COLLABORATION AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE TECAL GROUP OF THE UNIVERSITY OF EXTREMADURA AND GRANATUM PLUS
ONE CAPSULE OF HYDROXYTYROSOL PLUS WOULD BE EQUIVALENT TO CONSUMING LESS THAN 125 ML OF VIRGIN OLIVE OIL WITH A CONTENT OF 5 MG OF HYDROXYTYROSOL PER 20 ML.
The average hydroxytyrosol content in the capsules tested was 31.3 mg per capsule.
Regarding the comparison between the content in hydroxytyrosol and present in virgin olive oil and derivatives, it should be noted that Regulation (EU) 432/2012, establishes a list of permitted health claims.
The polyphenols in olive oil contribute to protecting blood lipids against oxidative damage. This claim may only be used in respect of an extra virgin olive that contains a minimum of 5 mg of hydroxytyrosol per 20 ml.
The average hydroxytyrosol content present in the HYDROXYTYROSOL PLUS capsules analysed was 31.3 mg per capsule.
Therefore, consuming a Hydroxytyrosol Plus capsule would be equivalent to consuming at least 125 ml of extra virgin olive oil with a content of 5 mg of hydroxytyrosol per 20 ml. This is a high enough content of hydroxytyrosol to qualify for the mention relative to Regulation (EU) 432/2012. In this case it should be noted that according to the scientific literature not all “virgin olive oils” present in the market reach the minimum levels of hydroxytyrosol in the aforementioned Regulation (Lucci et al. 2020)
